Strengthening Kenya’s Health Workforce: The Kericho Declaration
The multi-stakeholder event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, county governments, professional associations, regulatory bodies, and development partners to deliberate on the state of the health workforce and chart a shared path forward. The discussions culminated in the signing of the Kericho Declaration a landmark commitment that underscores Kenya’s resolve to prioritize human resources for health as a cornerstone of the national health system.
The Kericho forum built on the momentum of the Pre-National Human Resources for Health Dialogue held on 11th October 2023, in Nairobi. The Nairobi meeting, graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, brought together leaders and practitioners from across the health sector to align national and county priorities and foster dialogue on strengthening workforce development and management. Distinguished speakers, including Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo (WHO Country Representative), Ms. Mary Muthoni (PS for Public Health and Professional Standards), and Dr. Patrick Amoth (Ag. Director of Health), emphasized collaboration, innovation, and collective responsibility in advancing Kenya’s health workforce agenda.
Together, the two forums demonstrated a renewed national resolve to strengthen health workforce planning, development, and management — ensuring that every Kenyan has access to quality healthcare delivered by a well-supported and motivated workforce.
